What About...

Disposing of items that cannot be recycled at the curbside or placed in the trash?

Some of these Items, Still Usable, May Be Recycled at the annual Zero Waste Day run by the Recycling Committee in May

Items NOT allowed in either the curbside trash or recyclable collections   Options
Large Household Appliances  Including but not limited to refrigerators, stoves, heaters, air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, hot water heaters Residents are responsible for disposal and payment privately; check some private disposal options, local advertisements, internet, yellow pages, etc.  
Batteries -- alkaline or standard heavy duty, typically non-chargeable Alkaline batteries made in the USA after 1994 do not contain mercury and are safe to dispose with trash. Duracell and Energizer stopped using mercury in 1984. Batteries with a green tree logo or the words “no added mercury” or “zero mercury added” are also safe to dispose with the trash. Do not bring to the HHW or CRT event
Batteries -- non-alkaline, but not lead acid Mercury containing small batteries Drop off at the Health Department in Town Hall, or at the Water Treatment Plant at 437 Lowell Street or at the Senior Center; may be brought to the CRT event
Batteries -- Lead Acid Bring to a CRT or HHW event Do other drop off option is available; they may not be put in trash.
Bulky Items Residents are allowed ONE bulky item per week -- sofa, chair, recliner, mattress, box springs, table, desk, bookcase, carpeting Carpeting must be cut into a width no greater than four feet, rolled, taped or tied together, each bundle weighing less than fifty pounds; loose carpeting will not be accepted.
Cardboard The Town makes money on recycled cardboard Must be properly presented for recycling; it will not be accepted in trash; see What for details.
Cell Phones   Drop off at Water Treatment Plant or Senior Center
Christmas Trees Remove all decorations; place at curb with regular trash. Collected the same day as trash collection
Construction or Demolition Debris Including but not limited to asphalt, brick, concrete, windows, doors, roofing, sheetrock, siding, electric wires, radiators, insulation Residents are responsible for disposal and payment privately; check some private disposal options, local advertisements, internet, yellow pages, etc: Asbestos must be disposed of by a licensed Absestos contractor
Computer printer cartridges   For recycling, drop off at the Water Treatment Plant at 397 Lowell Street or at the information desk at Town Hall.

Fire Extinguishers Quality (mostly metal) extinguishers in good condition may be recharged; very old ones that contain carbon tetrachloride are hazardous and should be presented at the household hazardous waste event Local hardware store perhaps or listing under Fire Equipment in Yellow Pages for recharging services.
Flourescent Bulbs  Bring to CRT event No drop off options is available
Household Hazardous Waste Special Town HHW collection for recycling; several types of hazardous waste products  Check HHW for details; may be also recycled at Veridium in Lowell; call 978-453-7772 for an appointment
Latex Paint May be placed in trash if the paint is completely dry; will not be accepted in the HHW event Cover must be removed for the dryness to be apparent
Medical instruments -- needles and other sharp ones Needles, syringes, or other sharp objects may NOT be thrown in household trash or recycling, or flushed down the toilet. Contact the Andover Board of Health, 978-623-8295
Mercury Products Including but not limited to glass thermometers, old thermostats, blood pressure machines, barometers See HHW event
Large Quantities of Metals Only small quantities may be put in trash May be acceptable at a metal salvage yard or by one of the other private disposal options.
Motor Oil Recycle used oil by returning it to the point of purchase with your receipt. State law requires retailers to accept it and recycle it at no cost to you. No receipt and no cooperative seller -- North Andover DPW accepts motor oil at a cost of $.50 per gallon at 384 Osgood Street the first and third Saturday of every month, 9-noon.
Propane Tanks Twenty-pound tanks are unacceptable at the curbside or at the HHW or CRT event. Hardware store or other private disposal options.
Raw Wood Any untreated wood product devoid of stain,nails,etc; plywood, pressure treated wood, fences, previously nailed wood do not qualify. Wood must be no more than four feet long, in bundles less than six inches in diameter, weighing less than fifty pounds, taped or roped together at the curbside with regular trash
Styrofoam pellets   UPS store may accept clean ones for reuse.
Banned from regular trash and from recycling. Residents are responsible for proper disposal; check the private disposal options; the best time to recycle them is at the dealer when purchasing new ones.
