Curbside Leaves and Twigs; Burning; Compost Site

Curbside leaves (only) collection will start again the week of October 20 and continue for five weeks before Thanksgiving and the week following Thanksgiving, ending December 5, 2008, but none during the week of Thanksgiving. There will be similar collections from April 21 through May 31, 2009.

Taking leaves and grass clippings to the Compost site, noted below, is another option for Andover residents.  Another good option is composting your own for reuse as mulch or fertilizer, and leaving grass clippings directly on the lawn with a mulching mower.

Twigs and Branches in less than five bundles are allowed in the weekly trash.  Bundles should be less than seven inches in diameter, up to four feet long, fifty pounds or less, no foliage.  RAW (untreated, never nailed) wood may be disposed of similarly.

The "Burning Season" runs from January 15 through May 1.  A permit is required from the Fire Department.  (978-475-1281, x2012.

Place the leaves curbside by 7 a.m. on the regular weekly trash collection day with leaves in open trash barrels or brown paper compost bags (no plastic bags will be accepted). Only leaves and pine needles and cones will be picked upno twigs, branches, rocks, stumps.  A truck, separate from the normal trash truck, will pick up.  All missed collections must be called in to 978-623-8350 before the curbside leaf collection ends.

Remember, residents cannot put leaves, grass clippings or any other yard waste in with regular trash.

Another alternative is to take leaves, grass clippings and pine needles and cones (but no twigs, brush or other yard waste) to the town’s Bald Hill compost site on High Plain Road   Walk the leaves and grass clippings beyond the steel gate; nothing is to left on the side of the roadResidents must remove their leaves and grass clippings from their containers. Contaminated loads will be rejected.  Andover residents only; proof of residency will be required There are substantial fines for ILLEGAL dumping.  At the site residents may also pick up some finished compost for use in home gardens. "Walk-ins" will be allowed throughout the year.

Commercial permits are available through calling 978-623-8280.
