Burnham Road to Close at MBTA Railroad Bridge Beginning in Late March

Andover News Posted on March 17, 2026

Beginning in late March, Burnham Road will be closed in both directions at the railroad bridge as part of an MBTA bridge preservation and maintenance project. A detour will be in place for the duration of the closure.

The detour will route traffic around the closure using nearby local roads, including York Street, Haverhill Street, Enmore Street, and Dufton Road, to reconnect drivers on either side of Burnham Road. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes where possible.

This is an MBTA-led project involving the railroad bridge that carries the Haverhill Line over Burnham Road. According to project materials shared by the MBTA, the work will include bearing seat reconstruction, stone masonry repointing, and blast cleaning and painting of bridge steel. The purpose of the project is to preserve and maintain the bridge and extend its useful life.

The MBTA has indicated that construction is expected to begin at the end of March 2026 and continue for approximately eight months. Abutters have received notice about the project directly from the MBTA.

Questions about the project may be directed to StructuresMaint@mbta.com.
