[ARCHIVED] Town Update on PFAS

The Town of Andover is aware that the Lowell Regional Wastewater Utility has been granted a renewed permit relative to the discharge of runoff from the Turnkey Landfill in Rochester, NH. As a result, the Town has worked with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to collect samples of both the source water (“Raw Water”) and the water entering the distribution system (“Finished Water”). Samples were collected at the Town’s water treatment plan on Monday, November 4th, 2019. The samples are currently being tested at a laboratory and the analysis of the samples will be provided to the Town and published for public review. This process may take several weeks.

Andover has previously tested drinking water for PFAS consistent with EPA’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3). The results showed that PFAS were below the detection limit available at that time. Historically, water flowing through the Town’s distribution system has not been tested on a regular basis for PFAS as they are currently considered a non-regulated containment.

Water entering Andover’s treatment plant and distribution system is tested consistently for regulated containments. Andover continues to meet MassDEP requirements and water is safe for consumption.
