Deep Roots, New Branches: FAQ
1. How and when do I reserve a tree?
Trees must be reserved in advance through the online registration form. Reservation dates, species availability, and pickup details will be announced on the Town website and through community communications.
2. Must I be an Andover resident to reserve a tree?
Yes. This program is offered to Andover residents and property owners. Proof of residency may be requested at pickup.
3. What species of trees will be available? Can I choose the species I want?
A select list of tree species will be offered, chosen for their suitability to Andover’s climate and soils. Participants may select from the available species while supplies last. USE LINK TO LISTING OF TREE TYPES
4. Can I receive more than one tree?
To allow as many residents as possible to participate, each household is limited to one tree, unless otherwise noted.
5. Will someone show me how to plant my tree? Are there resources to help me plant my tree properly?
Yes. Planting instructions will be provided, and links to trusted online resources will be available. During Arbor Day celebration, Town arborist, Paul Sanborn, and his team will demonstrate proper planting techniques.
6. Where can I plant my tree?
Trees must be planted on private property with adequate space for their mature size. Trees may not be planted in the public right-of-way, conservation land, or wetlands without approval.
7. What if I cannot pick up my tree on the scheduled pickup date?
Trees must be picked up on the designated date and time. If you are unable to attend, you may send a representative to pick up your tree. Unclaimed trees may be redistributed.
8. I am not physically able to plant my tree. Can I get help planting it?
Limited assistance may be available. Information on volunteer help or local services will be shared, but availability cannot be guaranteed.
9. If my tree dies within the first year, will the Town replace it?
No. Due to limited funding and inventory, the Town cannot guarantee replacement. However, proper planting and watering greatly improve survival.
10. Do I need to call Dig Safe before I plant my tree in my yard?
Yes. Massachusetts law requires calling Dig Safe (811) at least 72 hours before digging to avoid underground utilities—even on private property.
11. What size will the trees be at pickup?
Trees are typically young saplings or container-grown trees that are manageable for one or two people to transport and plant.
12. How do I transport my tree home?
Most trees fit in a standard vehicle with seats folded down. Bringing a tarp or blanket is recommended to protect your vehicle.
13. When is the best time to plant my tree?
Trees should be planted as soon as possible after pickup, ideally within a day or two.
14. How much care will my tree need after planting?
Newly planted trees require regular watering during the first growing season. Mulching and proper placement are key to long-term success.
15. Are the trees deer resistant?
Some species are more deer resistant than others, but no tree is completely deer-proof. Protection may be needed, especially during the first year.
16. Why is this program important?
Trees improve air quality, manage stormwater, provide wildlife habitat, increase property value, and strengthen Andover’s tree canopy for future generations.
